China has reaffirmed its plans to construct the world's largest dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet, near the Indian border. Despite concerns from India and Bangladesh, China insists the dam will not harm downstream countries.

China reiterated its stand on Tuesday to build dam project in upstream belt of Brahmaputra in its own territory, saying it will “help” downstream countries, including India and Bangladesh, with their “disaster prevention and reduction and climate response”.

The project, estimated to cost around USD 137 billion, is located in the ecologically fragile Himalayan region along a tectonic plate boundary where earthquakes occur frequently

Concerns have been raised in India about the hydropower project enabling China to flood border areas during times of conflict.
