Drivers can now cruise through certain toll booths on the Pennsylvania Turnpike as open road tolling officially went into effect. Motorists now drive under gantries that classify and identify a vehicle's license plate or E-ZPass and electronically process tolls.

"Open Road Tolling (ORT) is the culmination of the PA Turnpike’s decade-long journey to modernize operations on our 565+ miles of roadway," the turnpike said in a news release.

Travelers will be able to pay their tolls without having to slow down or battle traffic at toll plazas. A series of gantries over the highway will take care of that.

It's a new era on the Pennsylvania Turnpike as Open Road Tolling rolled out over the weekend, making traditional toll booths obsolete.
