Cities across the US are making preparations to protect immigrants from Donald Trump’s planned mass deportation program during his second presidency. Los Angeles passed an ordinance in November that prohibits municipal resources from being used for federal immigration enforcement.

As the Trump administration promises the “largest deportation operation in history,” what does that mean for cities with “sanctuary laws.”

An executive order that Trump signed Monday, shortly after he was sworn in, directs federal officials to take actions “to ensure that so-called ‘sanctuary’ jurisdictions, which seek to interfere with the lawful exercise of Federal law enforcement operations, do not receive access to Federal funds.”

During President Donald Trump's first televised interview since his inauguration, he said he's considering cutting federal funding to sanctuary cities as part of his policies on immigration.

The city is still hoping to receive hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grant money even as it recently strengthened its sanctuary protections.

On his first full day back in the White House, President Donald Trump once again took aim at sanctuary policies in California and other states, threatening to investigate local police who don’t help his administration carry out mass deportations.
