The U.S. government fined American Airlines $50 million for failing to provide wheelchair assistance to passengers with disabilities and damaging thousands of wheelchairs over a five-year period.

The Transportation Department issued the fine after an investigation revealed “cases of unsafe physical assistance that at times resulted in injuries and undignified treatment of wheelchair users.”

FORT WORTH, Texas - American Airlines is facing a record fine for mishandling disabled passengers and damaging wheelchairs. The U.S. Department of Transportation ordered the airline to pay $50 million.
