American Express has agreed to pay a $108.7 million civil penalty to resolve allegations it deceptively marketed credit card and wire transfer products, according to the Justice Department.

American Express has agreed to pay nearly $109 million in fines related to deceptive marketing and false account allegations, the Justice Department announced Thursday.

The New York-based financial giant provided inaccurate tax advice to customers and potential customers on wire products primarily marketed at small and mid-size businesses, federal prosecutors

American Express said on Thursday it will pay about $230 million to settle U.S. criminal and civil probes into alleged deceptive practices in selling credit card and wire transfer products to small business customers.

The Justice Department said the company misrepresented its credit card rewards and fees and made false claims about the tax benefits of its wire transfer products.

The Wall Street Journal had reported on a series of deceptive and strong-arm tactics the card company used to increase small business sign-ups.

American Express will pay a total of about $230 million to resolve federal wire fraud investigations, and to settle civil allegations of deceptive marketing, the company said Thursday.
