Queen Latifah and Missy Elliott made history after the two legends became the first rap artists to be awarded a National Medal of Arts in light of their contributions to American culture and entertainment.

Other recipients of the National Medal of Arts include actors Idina Menzel and Eva Longoria, musician Flaco Jiménez, and producer Bruce Cohen. Photographer Carrie Mae Weems, whose works challenge societal norms, and painter Alex Katz will also be awarded, along with arts leaders Jo Carole Lauder and Bruce Sagan.

President Joe Biden handed out the prestigious arts and humanities awards to 39 recipients including Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott and Selena Quintanilla.
