The driver was operating an Infiniti SUV north on U.S. 701 when they veered off the road to the right and hit a tree near Marine Park Road, Butler said. The crash happened at 5:43 a.m. on Saturday and the person died on the scene.

A man has died after a head-on crash on NC 16 Friday afternoon, according to North Carolina Highway Patrol. Troopers say the accident occurred near Knollwood Drive in Wilkes County. According to a press release, a Jeep Cherokee traveling south on NC 16 crossed the center line and hit a Ford Explorer head-on.
