Mikaela Shiffrin sets first Alpine skiing race back from injury
On Nov. 30, Shiffrin crashed in a giant slalom run in Killington, Vermont, while bidding to become the first Alpine skier to reach 100 World Cup victories. She tumbled over and sustained a puncture wound seven centimeters deep into the right side of her abdomen, tearing into her external and internal oblique muscles.

Six weeks ago, Mikaela Shiffrin didn’t have the core strength to even rise out of a chair. A sneeze or a laugh brought on instant pain. That was all due to a serious crash in a giant slalom race on Nov. 30 in Killington, Vermont, where something punctured her in the side — still a mystery — and caused severe trauma to her oblique muscles.
