Families in Ireland have described the devastating damage to their homes after Storm Éowyn wreaked havoc throughout the country. Shane Egan, 33, from Ballinasloe, Co Galway said his family was lucky their house did not collapse on top of them as record-breaking winds caused destruction and power shortages across Ireland.

Emergency crews are cleaning up after a storm bearing record-breaking winds left at least one person dead and more than a million without power across the island of Ireland and Scotland.

A wind speed of 183kmh (114mph) brought by Storm Eowyn has been recorded in Ireland, the fastest since records began, Irish forecaster Met Eireann said. Residents across Ireland and Northern Ireland have been urged to stay at home as the storm sweeps across the island. In Co Down a gust of 92mph has been recorded this morning.

Northern Ireland is in “the eye of the storm” with a real threat to life and property, the First Minister has said.Some 93,000 homes and businesses were without electricity and police said there were more than 70 reports of trees down and other obstructions on the roads early on Friday as Storm Eowyn battered the region.

The storm brought record-breaking winds as it battered Ireland, Scotland and northern England on Friday. Hundreds of thousands of electricity customers were in the dark.
